I’d like to think there is a home for every cat or dog at York Adopt-A-Pet, or any other shelter for that matter. Isn’t it just a little bit sad that most, if not all, of the pets we have at the shelter were at one time in a home?
The reality of it is, we get calls daily for people who have seen a stray cat or dog, kittens or puppies, or someone wanting to relinquish their pet for whatever reason. We hear it all. We see it all; we even catch some of those in lies that they tell us about finding a stray or needing to relinquish their pet.
Every shelter in the state is full of just those pets. Our volunteers and staff work extremely hard to ensure that each and every cat and dog feels loved. There is a lot of emotion put into each pet. Regardless, if they are a cat or dog lover, they are all hoping that those pets do find their forever home soon.
Here is the question: Where did the abundance of those unwanted pets come from? Here are a few pets that have been at the shelter for awhile now and are looking for their forever home, although the shelter is their safe haven and is so much better than what they had.
Diablo is a black and white male pit bull terrier. He was brought to us 400 days ago by the police. His previous owner would either lock him in his kennel for days or just open the door and let him run loose. He hated other dogs and cats. He weighed 67 pounds. And had to fight for every meal. He loved people and has a favorite volunteer.
He now weighs 80 pounds and doesn’t have the desire to fight with every other four-legged animal around. He won’t even eat all his food at one time but feels secure enough to save some for later. He is very strong and loves to play ball, and you will find many toys in his kennel. He doesn’t like the cold but loves to play in the parks in the summer and can climb the fence across the street, or push through the pole and fence to play with other dogs. However, he feels safe here and doesn’t run to far.
Clause, Eve, Cocoa and St. Nick are our Christmas puppies. These pups were recently relinquished and brought to us by the Thayer County Sheriff’s Office. Their owner had broken her neck, and they were not being properly cared for. They are the most beautiful puppies with their silver/tan coats and silver eyes. They are about 16 weeks old and ready for their new home.
They will be very loving and make a great companion for any home. They have not had the best start in life and are looking for that to change and for their next adventure in their new home.
YAAP is very grateful for the 290 adoptions we have had this year. My Christmas wish is that all of our cats and dogs find a home this holiday season. Currently we have 105 cats/kittens and 29 dogs/puppies available for adoption. That total seems to change daily. Some will make a great addition to your home, and we can pair you with the right fit for your lifestyle. Make a wish come true for any of our pets. They just want a forever home.
