Tura, Jun 8: At least 10 cats and 2 kittens have died in the past two days in Bonepa locality of Tura under mysterious circumstances.
While no formal complaint has been lodged, pet owners are expressing their frustration, suspecting that the cats were deliberately poisoned.
Some speculate that someone might have poisoned dry fish to lure mice, inadvertently harming the cats who consumed it.
“We lack awareness about animal laws. People are unsure how to report such incidents to the police,” said one pet owner, whose four cats perished this morning.
Over the past three days, various pet owners have reported the deaths of their cats.
Unfortunately, none of the pet owners sought veterinary assistance, as they were perplexed about the cause of their pets’ sudden weakness, vomiting, and subsequent demise within a span of 2-3 hours.
If the pet owners decide to file a First Information Report (FIR), the police could potentially register a case of poisoning by unknown individuals under section 428, which deals with mischief by killing or maiming animals valued at Rs 10 or more. This section stipulates imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both, for those found guilty.
The names of pet who died are Grayme, blackpanther, Ugly, betty, Masimo, Whatagirl, Baby cat, Bonbon, Misswat and Kapaltaru.
