TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The fastest dog breed is a valuable topic to discuss, especially with people who are on the lookout for active dogs. As a part of the mammal kingdom, there are a variety of dog breeds that fall into several categories.

While dogs are high energy in nature, some dogs showcase more agility in their daily lives. These dogs fit well into active households and sometimes even take professions as herding dogs.

This article unveils the fastest dog breeds in the world and discusses each personality as cited from HighLand Canine Training and Wag Walking.

1. Greyhound: 45 mph

Greyhounds are the fastest dog breed, reaching over 45 mph at their best performance speed. These dogs have a typical lean and tall body that helps them move faster. Their long legs make a good picture when photographed while speeding.

Greyhounds were originally bred to be hunting dogs and have made a name as racing dogs due to their strong agility.

2. Saluki: 42 mph

Salukis are the second-fastest dog breed, with speeds recorded as quick as 42 miles per hour. This staggering number is the major reason why Saluki is considered part of the hunting dog community. They were originally bred to hunt rabbits, foxes, hares, gazelles, and jackals.

There was even a Saluki Racing at the Falconry Festival in the United Arab Emirates to expose their eminence in racing. Additionally, Saluki is also a favored breed for dog racing events in the Middle East and North America.

3. Afghan Hound: 40 mph

Afghan Hound follows suit in the list of fastest dog breeds, claiming about 40 miles per hour as the top recorded speed. Unlike the first two breeds, which appear slimmer with short fur, the Afghan Hound has thick and long fur. These features look astounding when they run through the wind.

Afghan Hound is a typical mountain breed that was originally used to chase large prey in Afghanistan. Today, they still carry a strong instinct to hunt small animals.

4. Vizsla: 40 mph

Known to be one of the oldest breeds in Europe, Vizsla came originally from Hungary. Their name, Vizsla, translates to ‘tracker’ in the Hungarian language. This breed’s remarkable agility is reflected in their lean body but full of muscles.

In general, Vizsla are well-mannered dogs that are gentle with children. They will do well in active households as a companion or guard dog.

5. Dalmatian: 37 mph

Besides having a distinctive pattern, Dalmatian is also one of the fastest dog breeds that love active exercises outdoors. These dogs are athletic in nature and have remarkable endurance. Their origin dates way back to the 1600s, when they were bred mainly to protect the borders of Dalmatia.

6. Whippet: 35 mph

Whippet has a similar figure to Greyhound, but they are generally smaller in size. This medium-sized dog can reach up to 35 miles per hour, earning a spot in the list of fastest dog breeds. Whippets can make a great family pet due to their gentle nature with children.

7. Doberman Pinscher: 32 mph

Doberman Pinscher is a famous K9 dog breed that can speed up to 32 miles per hour. Their physical figures, which feature long legs, tall necks, and lean bodies, stand out among other guard dogs.

8. Border Collie: 30 mph

Border Collie is an intelligent breed that has excellent agility. As a part of the fastest dog breeds, they are energetic and love to run. While many people are captivated by their charm, it’s important to notice that this breed requires daily exercise. Therefore, they will do well in active households.

9. Jack Russell Terrier: 30 mph

Jack Russell Terrier is famed to be the fastest small dog breed. Under its small size is the high speed that can reach up to 30 miles per hour. Despite their size, they have a sturdy body and protective instincts towards their territory.

10. Poodle: 30 mph

While these dogs appear dainty, poodles are among the fastest dog breeds that can speed around 30 miles per hour. The Standard Poodles are said to be the fastest compared to the Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle.

These fastest dog breeds were mostly bred to hunt and will make a great complement to active households.
