11 pets exposed to rabid skunk in Oconee Co.


OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Nearly a dozen dogs were exposed to a rabid skunk in Oconee County.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control said the skunk was found near Boat Ramp Road and South Union Road in southern Oconee County.

The skunk was submitted for lab testing on March 28 and confirmed to have rabies.

11 dogs were exposed to the skunk and will be quarantined. DHEC said no people were known to have been exposed.

This is the first animal to test positive for rabies in Oconee County in 2024. There have been 20 cases statewide.

The state averages around 148 rabies cases per year.
