138 pets adopted at Orange County Animal Services this weekend. But 278 remain

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orange County Animals Services had a big weekend for adoptions, but more help is needed.

Last week the county shelter announced that it was caring for 600 pets, including 226 dogs and 112 cats at the shelter itself, and another 262 pets in foster homes. The shelter reduced adoption fees on all animals to $10 and also brought dogs to a mega-adoption event in Plant City.

In the end, 58 dogs, all of the dogs workers brought, were adopted at the Plant City event. Dozens of animals were also adopted at the shelter this weekend, bringing the grand total to 138 pets that found new homes this weekend.

“Our goal for the three-day stretch was 150 pet adoptions, including the event and our efforts at base here in Orlando. We ultimately matched 138 pets with new families during the period. While we fell short of our goal, this was still an impressive reach and a success,” the shelter posted on Facebook Monday.

But Orange County Animal Services still needs more help.

The shelter says it is still housing about 175 dogs and 103 cats. Workers are looking for adopters, but they are also in need of foster homes, which help to reduce overpopulation in the shelter.

Kitten season is also underway, which means the need for fosters is especially great right now.
