Rescue op exposes shocking condition in which several breeds of dogs were kept

Illegal dog breeding operations near Kanakasri Housing Society, situated behind KMT Apartments, have been a concern for several months. A local Animal Welfare Organization received numerous complaints from worried residents regarding this illicit activity. On Monday, a rescue operation was executed, resulting in the successful rescue of over 14 dogs that were being kept in deplorable and unhygienic conditions.

Harish KB, a Member of Bangalore Urban SPCA and Anti-Animal Cruelty Officer for People for Animals, highlighted the inhumane conditions in which the dogs were kept. These conditions violated the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA) Section 11 and the Karnataka Breeding and Marketing of Pet Animals Rules, 2019 (KB Act 93), along with other relevant regulations applicable to such circumstances.

Prompted by reports from concerned residents, Harish swiftly took action. He alerted the Bagalur police station about the situation and contacted the Karnataka Animal Husbandry Department. The police acted promptly, arriving at the location with Harish. They discovered that the gates to the facility where the dogs were kept were locked, and there was no one in attendance. Working with rescuers, the police broke open the lock and gained access to the premises. Inside, they found 14 dogs of various breeds, including Beagles, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Saint Bernards, Siberian Huskies, and Rottweilers. The dogs were in a distressing state, suffering from malnourishment, skin infections, and injuries.

Harish said, “Any dog breeding activity must be conducted with the necessary permissions from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and the local authority, ensuring strict adherence to all conditions and maintenance of accurate medical records for the animals. However, here, no rules were followed, and the residents complained that the illegal breeding had been going on for years. The dogs valued at Rs 3-4 lakh were rescued. Initially, we took the dogs to the Bagalur police station until we found a shelter. The animals were also checked by a veterinarian and then shifted to Girish Shelter in Kengeri for rehabilitation.”

Harish further pointed out that rescuing these dogs is a reminder that one must actively combat illegal breeding operations to protect the rights and dignity of animals. “Strict action should be taken against the accused. The accused stated that these were rescued dogs they had kept in a shelter, but this is far from the truth. We could know that the dogs were kept for breeding,”he said.
