Despite their perilous situation, both dogs managed to pull themselves out of the water before any rescue team could reach them.

This quick thinking by the passerby likely helped save their lives.

Rescue Efforts and Outcomes

One of the dogs ran off before firefighters could check its condition.

The second dog was treated by paramedics who helped to restore its core body temperature.

After receiving medical attention, the dog was handed over to Animal Control to aid in finding its owner.

Aurora Fire Rescue emphasized the importance of staying safe around icy conditions and provided tips to avoid similar incidents.

Safety Tips for Cold Weather and Ice

Aurora Fire Rescue advised pet owners to always keep their pets on a leash when near frozen bodies of water.

If someone or a pet falls through the ice, they should immediately call 911 and stay on the shore.

It’s vital to stay calm and conserve energy if someone falls through the ice; swimming can cause them to lose body heat quickly.

Instead, they should try to get their arms onto the ice and kick their feet hard to help lift themselves out.
