2 pet dogs freeze to death, Decatur cops report

DECATUR — Detectives are investigating after two dogs appeared to have frozen to death in the yard of a Decatur home.

The pet deaths were discovered Jan. 23 and reported to the Macon County Animal Control and Care Center, which turned the case over to the Decatur Police Department, according to Sgt. Joseph Sawyer.

Speaking Sunday, he told the Herald & Review the black and white dogs of an unknown breed were found at an address in the 1500 block of South Fairview Avenue.

“The dogs were in a shed in the yard with a blanket covering them,” said Sawyer.

“There was food and water in a bowl and, I would imagine in the timeframe the deaths happened, that the dogs probably froze to death.”

Sawyer said cruelty to animals is a felony and, as the deaths occurred within the city limits, the case had been turned over to the city police department.

“These cases get immediately assigned to detectives who will be following up with it and investigating,” Sawyer added.

Decatur has seen several high-profile cases of animal cruelty in recent years, including that of a pit bull called Berry Blue who died just before Christmas 2022 after being left outside to freeze. Four other dogs in that same incident were found in various stages of suffering but they survived after treatment.

Berry Blue’s owner, Mark A. Miller Jr., 44, was sent to prison for 18 months when he appeared in Macon County Circuit Court in October and pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals.

The case shocked the city, and the Decatur City Council voted 6-0 to toughen city ordinances against animal cruelty. The heightened laws said all pets living outside must have adequate shelter with walls on all sides, a raised dry floor and protection from excessive cold and heat.
