CANNON BEACH, Ore. (KPTV) – On Tuesday afternoon two teenagers and their dog were caught in a rip current at Cannon Beach.
According to the Cannon Beach fire & rescue, around 1:15 p.m. rescuers were called to rescue two people in front of the Tolovana Wayside.
When rescuers arrived on the scene, they found that the two people were already out of the water and on the beach, conscious and breathing.
They were described as an 18-year-old and a 14-year-old who had been boogie boarding in the ocean. Both were wearing wetsuits. Rescuers said the 14-year-old was able to get themselves and the 18-year-old out of the water.
Both were taken to Providence Seaside Hospital by ambulance and as of 6:40 p.m. both were reportedly doing fine.
Cannon Beach fire crews later found out that the family dog was rescued from the water as well and was doing fine.
Cannon Beach Fire reminded people who intend to visit the coast to take the following safety precautions:
1. If you are caught in a rip current, stay calm and don’t fight the current.
2. Swim parallel to the beach, following the shoreline, then swim to shore.
3. If you cannot escape, float or tread water.
4. If you need help call of wave for help.
5. Don’t go out in the ocean beyond your knees and children should be within arms reach of parents.
6. When in doubt, don’t go out.
7. If you see someone in trouble call 911 immediately. Do not attempt to rescue them if you are at risk of becoming a victim yourself.
8. Do not leave until first responders arrive, speak to you, and give you the ok to leave.
9. Keep an eye on all pets anytime they are near water.
