PetSmart Charities has awarded Central Arkansas Rescue Transport a $25,000 grant to support a regional pet transport program.
Central Arkansas Rescue Transport and the city of Bryant said that the program, through a coalition of eight Arkansas rescues and shelters, involves transporting “homeless cats and dogs to destination partners in six states.”
Animals move from areas of high pet overpopulation to those of high demand for adoptable pets, according to Central Arkansas Rescue Transport and city of Bryant.
Funds will be used by Central Arkansas Rescue Transport's coalition members to cover costs to prepare animals for transport.
As an example of how the program worked earlier during the summer, Central Arkansas Rescue Transport and the city of Bryant said the Bryant Animal Control and Adoption Center sent 14 cats, puppies and kittens from multiple rescues and shelters in Central Arkansas to the Chicago metropolitan area, where they were delivered to a shelter partner.
Two of the animals needed major medical care, which could be expensive and require weeks of rehabilitation after treatment, Central Arkansas Rescue Transport and city of Bryant said.
