A pregnant dog’s gestation period is around 63 days from conception.

But, just like with humans, dogs can give birth a bit earlier or later.

1. Labor breathing

A sure sign of your dog going into labor is labored breathing.

If you notice panting and deep breathing, puppies are on the way.

Things will move swiftly, so it’s time to prepare the birthing area and make your dog as comfortable as possible.

2. Restlessness

As labor approaches, dogs can get restless due to increasing discomfort.

They might pace around, dig at blankets and pillows, and shiver while standing still.

These actions often signal the start of contractions, and they usually last for a few hours before delivery begins.

3. Hardenned belly

In the days just before giving birth, a pregnant dog’s belly becomes hard and firm to the touch.

It won’t give much when you gently press it.

These changes are usually due to contractions and can cause your dog to whine or yelp occasionally.

Knowing the signs of impending labor helps you support your dog through motherhood.

When you spot these signs, puppies should arrive within days, or even hours.

Keep an eye out for these signs around the 55th day of pregnancy.
