Dogs’ therapeutic potential extends beyond short-term or everyday interactions. Assistance dogs have helped people manage a variety of illnesses and impairments, both mental and physical. For example, assistance dogs can be extremely beneficial to people suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). They can be trained to detect anxiety triggers and provide soothing behaviours such as nudging or licking their owner’s hand. This physical contact and sense of security can assist people with PTSD in managing their symptoms and feeling safer in their surroundings.

When it comes to children, both parents and mental health professionals concur that there are numerous advantages. Children frequently build strong ties with their canine companions while also feeling a sense of responsibility for something much smaller than themselves. Positive interactions between children and dogs have been associated with enhanced play behaviour, social skills, emotional development, and general well-being. Companion animal ownership has been linked to a wide range of physical and psychological health advantages. The amount to which a person obtains any welfare benefits from the animal in their care, on the other hand, may be tied to a number of things, one of which being the quality of the human-animal bond. Little attention has been given to how attachment to a companion animal impacts psychological well-being during a global pandemic. This is especially important because mental health has been shown to decline significantly during such times. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the quality of the companion animal-human attachment and mental well-being during a COVID-19-induced national lockdown in the United Kingdom. 

A purpose-designed online survey measuring socio-demographic background, companion animal ownership status, attachment level, and various components of mental wellbeing (depression, loneliness, positive experience, stress) was developed and completed by 249 UK-based adults (146 companion animal owners and 103 non-owners). The study found no significant association between companion animal ownership and any of the mental health outcome variables. 

Attachment to one’s companion animal had no significant effect on participants’ stress levels. Overall, the outcomes of this study indicate emotional fragility among persons who are very devoted to their companion animal, albeit limits must be considered. This is an area that warrants additional investigation, especially given the pandemic-induced increase in the number of people who have adopted a companion animal and the anticipated increase in mental health problems as a result of COVID-19.

There is no other friendship like that which animals provide. It is unique and distinct from the affection of a friend, sexual partner, or even a parent. Their unwavering devotion serves as a reminder that we are valuable just the way we are. They don’t make us feel unwelcome, so we may have our terrible days while lying in bed with the shades drawn. They don’t make us feel worthless or unloveable, so we may enjoy our good times while dancing and singing in unconventional ways. Humans and their dogs have a very amazing bond. It is uncommon to find relationships that are purely based on love—warm, comforting, unconditional love without any expectations, needs, or desires.
