Running, particularly long-distance trail running, is often described as a deeply personal and solitary experience. With each footfall echoing through quiet forest paths or winding nature trails, runners are left alone with their thoughts and the steady rhythm of their breath. While some runners rely on music, audiobooks, or podcasts to break the silence, there’s no escaping the mental challenges that surface after several miles. Around mile eight, when fatigue sets in and motivation begins to wane, the loneliness can feel especially intense — a test of both physical endurance and mental strength.

Alondra’s reaction was immediate. She let out an excited whoop, joyfully announcing her presence to the animals as she continued running. But the deer, graceful and unbothered, barely acknowledged her. A few heads turned briefly before returning to their meal. There were no loud cheers, no applause, no encouraging signs with witty slogans like “You’re Deer-ly Close to the Finish!” — just the soft rustle of leaves and the quiet, grounded energy of wildlife in its natural habitat.

Yet in that silence, Alondra found an unexpected kind of encouragement. While the deer didn’t offer the kind of support you might get from friends cheering on a racecourse, their mere presence was a mental lift. It was a gentle reminder that she was not alone — that the world around her was alive and beautiful, moving at its own pace alongside hers.

Encounters like these can be transformative for trail runners. Seeing wildlife along a route offers a break from the repetitive thoughts that often swirl through a runner’s mind during long stretches. For many, including myself, glimpsing nature during a run — whether it’s a group of deer, a scurrying raccoon, or even a shy opossum — brings a wave of joy and renewed energy.

There’s something about the stillness of a deer or the curious glance of a woodland creature that reconnects you with your surroundings. It pulls you out of the tunnel vision of fatigue and into the present moment. You breathe deeper. You feel more alive. And suddenly, the path ahead doesn’t seem quite so daunting.

As a runner, I’ve had my fair share of memorable animal encounters. I’ve spotted striped skunks (who, in case you’re wondering, are not fans of surprise affection), playful squirrels, and the occasional fox darting across the trail. Each one, no matter how brief the sighting, has added a layer of richness to the run — a story to carry with me long after the workout ends.

For city runners, animal sightings are a little different. Urban routes offer glimpses of dogs tugging on leashes, cats lounging in sun-drenched windows, or the occasional pigeon strutting along a sidewalk. These encounters, while familiar, are still part of the rhythm of running. Even an overly enthusiastic dog behind a fence can provide an adrenaline boost — just not the kind most runners are hoping for!

Still, there’s something uniquely soothing about the kind of wildlife you find in nature preserves and wooded parks. Deer, in particular, seem to embody calmness and quiet strength. And even though they didn’t offer any outward signs of encouragement to Alondra, their presence was enough to help her push forward.

Shortly after being released, he became overcome by rage and frustration and began violently wailing on his poor, trembling, frightened dog. It's clear that this man's violent tendencies didn't decrease after serving his time.

In the world of running, support often comes in surprising forms. Sometimes it’s a stranger offering a high-five. Other times it’s a personal best flashing on your watch. And on rare, beautiful occasions, it’s a quiet herd of deer standing by the path at just the right moment.

For Alondra Payan, that moment at mile eight wasn’t just a wildlife sighting — it was a turning point. A natural boost that reminded her of why she runs: not just for physical fitness, but for connection, peace, and the small, unexpected joys found along the way.
