With National Pet Day just concluded April 11, Stitches From the Heart Quilt Guild brings to mind a long-running initiative aimed at helping animals in need: handmade pet beds created from leftover fabric.

Article content

The Pet Bed Program was launched in 2015 by Guild member Nadene House, who sought to repurpose small fabric scraps typically discarded after quilting projects. After consulting with fellow members, she organized a workshop that spring to teach participants how to turn the scraps into beds suitable for cats and dogs.

Since its inception, the program has produced 1,978 pet beds of various sizes. The beds are donated to shelters and animal care organizations in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding communities, including the Humane Society, TAAG, Northern Critters, Second Chances, Elmo Rescue, PetValu, and Paw N’ Pet Foods.

The program has also expanded beyond the local area. Donations have reached communities in Ontario such as Lively, Sudbury, Burlington, Oakville, and Hamilton, as well as locations in Michigan, including Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa, and Lansing.

Community members interested in donating clean fabric scraps or participating in the pet bed project can contact Nadene House at saultquilts@outlook.com.

The Stitches From the Heart Quilt Guild, active for more than 30 years with over 100 members, meets monthly at the Senior’s Centre on Bay Street. More information about the Guild and its programs is available at www.saultquilts.com or on Facebook at Stitches from the Heart Quilt Guild (SSM, ON).
