CEBU CITY, Philippines — It was heart attack, and not an aggressive attack from his dog, that killed 63-year-old George Mayol, the man found lifeless in his own home in Barangay Lawaan 1, Talisay City last September 28.

Mayor Gerald Anthony ‘Samsam’ Gullas announced they would push through with Spike’s adoption after health authorities confirmed that Mayol died due to cardiac arrest.

“I received the official death certificate on George Mayol earlier today. According to death certificate, Mayol died of a heart attack,” Gullas wrote on social media.

Proceed with putting him up for adoption

In turn, the city government will proceed with having Spike, Mayol’s pet dog, up for adoption, together with five more canine placed under the City Veterinarian’s care, within the week.

“With that in mind, our acting City Veterinarian, Dr. Hope Dejadena, will shorten the observation period for Spike, the dog in question,” said Gullas.

The city government planned to release Spike for adoption by Sunday, he added.

Spike initially blamed for death

Spike was initially blamed for the death of Mayol, who was found lifeless inside a hut on his property in Barangay Lawaan 1, Talisay City on September 28.

The victim had been living all by himself and with his pet dogs, including Spike.

Netizens, however, questioned the veracity of reports, prompting police to conduct further investigation behind Mayol’s untimely demise.

Spike then had been transferred to the city veterinarian where he was placed under a two-week observation period.

No signs of aggressiveness

In the meantime, Gullas said Spike had not been showing any signs of aggressiveness while under the city veterinarian’s custody.

The mayor also thanked concerned citizens for rallying to find Spike a new home.

“I would like to thank everyone, ilabi na sa atong very active nga acting City Vet and to our furparents nga nishow gyud sa ilang pagsupport ug love for Spike and all the dogs concerned,” said Gullas.
