Meet Blondie (A292407)! She came to us as a stray and this German Shepherd mix weighs 44 pounds. She is thought to be housebroken, given her neat kennel. For more information on this sweet girl, please come and meet her in person. We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption! Her fee is waived!

All adoptions include spay/neuter, age-appropriate vaccines and microchip. Business hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Access from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday is by appointment.
Sweet Rango (A291514) knows sit, down and paw. And we are 95% sure he’s housebroken, given his best kennel and the way he makes a beeline to potty as soon as he gets out of it. He originally came to us as a stray and this sweet boy is ready for forever. He will need his forever home to be one without cats. He has now been here for more than 59 days. Please come and meet him in person for more information. We recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. His fee is waived and his adopter will receive two free sessions with Highland Canine Training!

Meet our current shelter longtimer, Horton (A289579)! Horton loves pup cups and being told that he is a good boy! He has had the opportunity twice in the last week to get out for a Doggie Day Out and he did GREAT! You may have seen him with his fosters, walking around downtown Statesville, then relaxing at the Daveste Vineyards in Troutman! Afterwards, they even treated him to a bath at Tractor Supply. Then, a few days later, his fosters picked him up again and treated him to getting his nails done, and he did GREAT! While spending time with him, his fosters were able to learn that he likes car rides, and loves showing affection and loyalty to his humans! He has a big bark, to match his 85-pound frame, but a heart just as big!! He doesn’t show the real Horton in his kennel and after more than 118 days of being here, it’s easy to understand his frustration. He LOVES being with humans and will need a home with no cats, and there is no exception to this. He seems interested in other dogs and can be reactive, possibly wanting to engage and just not really knowing how to do so. He may do best with no small children, given his size and his inability to understand how big he is. He may still wish to be a lap dog and we get it! Horton has an easygoing personality and really is a good boy. He is totally housebroken and will make the best family dog for the family perfect for him. Like Horton, we are not giving up him finding them! Horton is 4 years old and his fee is waived! In addition to his fee being waived, his adopter will also receive two free training sessions with Highland Canine Training to help make for a seamless transition for Horton and his forever family. We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption.
The shelter is near capacity for dogs and to help clear the shelter, adoptions for dogs are currently $10.
The normal fee schedule is as follows: Dogs/puppies, $80; cats/kittens, $65; PetSmart only, cats/kittens, $20.

Sweet Jesse (A291720) is still such a puppy and he is such a sweet one at that! He is working on leash training and is improving. He is not food motivated and he does great in playgroups with other dogs! That FAAACE!!! We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. Want to help, but you aren’t ready to adopt? How about volunteering? We are looking for long-term volunteers willing and able to give of their time, ideally weekly, for let’s say … forever? If you are only looking for short-term hours or a certain amount of hours for school service, community service project, special interest or others, please come see us, too. For those only needing short-term or limited hours, our volunteer program may not be for you, but we have other options available. We can tell you this for certain … ICAS volunteers are THE best and we can’t do what we do without them.
The Books & Buddies reading program is now running. No appointment is necessary. Reading times are from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Bring a book or borrow one from the shelter and grab a stool.
The Books & Buddies guidelines are:
Children of all ages and adults are welcome to read.
Children 15 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Do not put fingers in the kennels.
Do not run or make loud noises around the animals.
One person can be reading in the cat room at a time.
Readers must track their own service hours. Any staffer can sign off on service hours.

Fostering is a great way to get the animals out of the shelter for a reprieve and a great opportunity to get them in front of potential adopters they wouldn’t see while being in the shelter.
Otto (A292455) is just over one year in age and weighs 36.60 pounds. This cutie is so sweet and still so puppy like with his curiosity and we love it! We do know that puppies require patience and consistency, and his forever family will be more than happy to give him all that and more! He doesn’t like loud noises and that’s OK! He is energetic, walks well on a leash, has one awesome play bow and gets mad zoomies! If you would like more information on Otto, please visit us in person! Fosters are true lifesavers in providing the tender loving care that the cats and kittens so desperately need for the animals’ best possible outcome.
This cute boy (A292284) loves fetch! He can pull some while on leash and is making strides in improving! He keeps a clean kennel and potties as soon as he is outside, and with a foster proved he was housebroken. He also proved that he was the life of the party and was VERY social with everyone he met, always going back and checking in on his humans in case they needed some Meeko lovin’! He is fun, loves kisses and hugs and making new friends! He is treat motivated and has great energy, which will make training a breeze (with patience and consistency) with this little guy! He is strong, despite his small size and tries to use his cuteness to have his way, which does work on us some of the time. He gets along with other dogs and did great with a foster getaway with both other dogs and a large crowd with lots of them! His fee is waived!

Mya (A291015) is so ready for her family to find her. If you are interested in adopting her, NOW IS THE TIME!!! She is super-stressed being here and she needs to find her forever! We can tell you she loves cuddles and we love that she is always willing to share cuddles with us when we need one! This super sweet girl walks great on a leash with a martingale collar, she is very responsive and does great with her training! Mya is 2 years old and weighs 47.30 pounds, and she is a true sweetheart. She is definitely used to being in a home and you can tell she is ready for her family to find her! As for size of dry kitten food, 3.15- or 6.3-pound bags are easiest for fosters to handle.
Samson (A292095 went on a Doggie Day Out on Saturday, and this is what his fosters let us know about him along with some pictures of how it all went: “Samson might be a bit slobbery, but he’s beyond sweet! He hops in and out of the car with ease and likes to give lots of kisses while you drive! He is good with everyone he meets, from toddlers to those in wheelchairs. He enjoys having his belly rubbed and is very treat motivated. Whether it was having a bath at Southern States, picking out his own treat (which he was very proud of!), making new friends in downtown Statesville, or enjoying the shade at the vineyards, Samson was happy to go with the flow!” Samson is 3 years old and weighs 63 pounds. He is treat motivated, loves affection and knows some common tricks that he loves to work on! Those tricks are sit, lay down and rollover and he is looking for his forever family to teach him more! This cutie is also housebroken! His fee is waived and his adopter will received two free training sessions with Highland Canine Training.
Animal Services also holds drive-thru rabies clinics from 6-7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month. The fee is $5, cash only.
