Shelter staff say he is always wagging his tail and has a happy look on his face.

KERRVILLE, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week's Forgotten Friend is Nash, a three-year-old Dachshund and Terrier mix that was found wandering around, possibly lost, as a stray back in 2022 and brought to the Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society in Kerrville. His owner never showed up to get him. Nash was adopted once before and was in that home for about six months. Sadly, he was brought back to the shelter after the owner said he just didn't bond with the man of the house. He adored the wife, shelter staff tell us, but for some reason, Nash just never learned to trust the man.

“Nash has been timid with men in the past but with the right person we know he’d learn to trust men again,” said shelter staff.

When he meets a new man at the shelter, he’s been initially reluctant. But with patience and gentleness on the man’s part, Nash warms up quickly.

“He hasn’t been around many children at the shelter but based on his very happy go lucky personality he would probably be fine with kids,” said shelter staff.

He gets along with most other dogs as long as they aren’t aggressive. Shelter staff thinks he would get along great with cats.

He’s a little on the chubby side, so would probably benefit from a healthy diet.

“He’s got the cutest ears and one has a notch in it,” said shelter staff. “We have no clue how that happened. And speaking of ears, one is always up and the other one down.”

He loves to go on walks and does well on a leash with a harness. Nash is also housebroken, so you don't have to worry about him having any accidents. He loves getting pets and treats and adores having his back scratched.

He enjoys playing in a baby pool, leaping in with no fear.

“He goes completely underwater, head first, into the baby pool,” said shelter staff. “He leaps right into the pool the way a Labrador would.”

Nash never has a bad day. He’s happy all of the time. Oh and he has no idea that he’s a small dog.

“He’s definitely got a big dog personality,” said shelter staff.

He’s healthy, neutered, current on all of his vaccinations and just waiting for you to bring him home and love him.

“He’s extremely confident and is bursting with fun-loving personality,” said shelter staff. “He’s so entertaining to be around and always finds ways to amuse himself both in and outside.”

Shelter staff say Nash is always wagging his tail and has a happy look on his face.

If you are interested in adopting Nash, or another dog or cat you can visit the Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society in Kerrville  at 2900 Junction Highway. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until Noon and again from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The adoption fee for Nash is $85.

Applications can also be emailed to them at hsk@hctc.net. The shelter's phone number is (830) 367-7722.

For whoever adopts Nash, Lucy's Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy's most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

The shelter says they can always use volunteers at their resale shop, which helps to support the shelter. The resale shop is staffed entirely by volunteers. You can support them by donating gently used items, or by stopping by and purchasing stuff. The shop is affectionately known as the “pick of the litter resale shop.” The shop is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They are closed on Sundays and on major holidays. Call them at (830) 367-7755.

Monetary donations are always welcome, too. Send them to their post office box at P.O. Box 294810 Kerrville, Texas 78029.

They always need things to help with the care of the animals. Check out their current wish list below.

You can follow Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society on Facebook.

Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives… the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.

If you know of a Forgotten Friend that has been overlooked and is still looking for a “fur-ever” home, contact Andrea at acarden@kens5.com.
