A proposed change to a food and safety code in the state could allow dog owners to bring their pets into restaurants and bars with them.
HONOLULU (Island News) — A proposed change to Hawaii's food and safety code could officially allow pet dogs in restaurants and bars.
While some restaurants already allow dogs in outdoor dining spaces, it's technically against state law.
The amendment would allow pet dogs to enter an eatery under a list of requirements:
- Has signage to notify customers that pet dogs are allowed.
- Has a separate entrance to the outdoor dining area to prevent the dogs from walking through the restaurant.
- Prevents workers from interacting with the dogs.
- Keeps the pet area clean.
- The dogs must be on a leash or in a carrier.
During a public hearing, Department of Health (DOH) officials heard public comment and answered questions about the potential rules. Health officials said the businesses would be allowed to make a decision on whether or not to allow dogs in.
DOH will now send the proposal to the governor for his consideration. An answer is expected by February 2025 or some time in the spring.
