Yes, Max spreads love wherever he goes. I can’t begin to tell you how special Max is. He was only at my house for 36 days, but long enough to make a lasting love for the short time that I fostered him. He had lived his thirteen years with a couple who had adopted him as a small kitten. They had loved and cared for him and when they went into assisted living, a special friend of theirs called and asked me if I could take Max. She had been fostering Max but her dogs were making him nervous. The family had discussed the very hard decision to place him in my care. I promised them that I would care for him and would make certain that he went into a special home. I was prepared for him to stay with me if a “perfect” home could not be found. I put a short video on my Facebook page with this message “Meet 13 year old Max, his family both went into assisted living and he was not allowed to go with them. Call me if you are interested (with my cell #). You will need to fill out our application that is posted on York Adopt a Pet website.
Much to my surprise I received a text from a friend dating back into the late 60’s. They had moved to Iowa years ago, and I can’t remember the last time we were together. She said she and her husband were very interested in Max. I couldn’t believe that yes the perfect home wanted to adopt Max.
To give a little background on our friendship Lynn & Ron. They helped us move into our home in 1970. Bob had just returned from a year in Viet Nam and we decided to purchase a house in the east part of York. One evening several couples were at our home on Burlington Ave. having a “little party”. Someone asked when we were going to move, one of the guys said why don’t we move you tonight? I am serious. We moved furniture, clothes, washer/dryer, stove and refrigerator. They moved everything that was movable. Without mentioning names you know the couples that were involved. The guys did the heavy lifting and the gals cleared out cupboards and closets. Needless to say, yes they got us moved. They moved the refrigerator without taking a single item out. The only thing that spilled was a large jar of sweet pickles … I still remember the next morning facing the daunting task of sorting through boxes of cereal put in the bathroom, clothes on the counter. What a great group of friends and what a great memory. The hard part was over, we were indeed moved, maybe items weren’t in their designated spots but we were officially moved into 408 Ohio.
And to think that Max would be going to the perfect home and I will be able to keep in touch with him is a miracle. Ron and Lynn drove out on July 29, almost 250 miles from their home in Iowa. We met at York Adopt a Pet. Lynn had purchased food, beds, blankets and a carrier ready to take Max home. First hiccup the kennel was too small for this big ole boy. I gave them the one that they had donated when he was brought to my house. He was ready to go, climbing right into the kennel as if to say lets get this show on the road.
To combine his first few days at home, he hid under the bed (typical of a cat) and Lynn didn’t think he was eating so took him to the vet to be checked out. He had a little cough so gave him some steroids, and appetite enhancer. He wasn’t eating the food that went home with, they tried several kinds and when the Science Diet was offered he dived in and started to eat.
Max is one of those cats that you never forget, gentle and easy going. He has a heart of gold and his big beautiful eyes are almost minimizing. He is definitely a lap cat.
Thank you to Max’s family and their friend for trusting me to find a perfect home for a perfect cat. And thank you Ron & Lynn for opening your hearts and home to him. It is devastating for an older cat to be uprooted from the only home they have ever known, but as we know life doesn’t always work out the way we have it planned, and things change with the best laid plans. I know that we here in Nebraska who have known Max knows he will adjust and will love his new home and family. Max has enough love to spread it wherever he goes.
