JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – If you have a rodent problem at your rural home or business, a new pet could be a fix.
Working cats are now available for adoption at the Northeast Arkansas Humane Society. Adoption fees are reduced to $50 since the cats work for their room and board.
All cats NEAHS are vaccinated, neutered or spayed, and microchipped.
Working cats thrive outdoors in environments like barns, warehouses, and factories opposed to a cozy couch in the living room. They are independent and earn their keep by deterring rodents and other unwanted pests.
Animal Cruelty Investigator Lisa Trevathan said working cats benefit anyone with a pest problem.
“Like people who have horse barns because mice get into the feed,” Trevathan said. “So they’ll just put a couple of cats out there and it takes care of the situation and it’s a win-win for everybody.”
Working cats cannot be held inside the shelter, but Trevathan said they are being kept somewhere safe.
“We can’t take feral cats in here, they do not do well in a shelter setting,” Trevathan said.
