Oak Bay Police have issued a warning after a family pet was killed by a deer this week.
Residents near the 800 block of Newport Avenue are urged to stay vigilant around wildlife after a tragic incident last night involving an aggressive deer.
Oak Bay Police have confirmed that a buck fatally attacked a dog in the yard of a family home Wednesday night.
The attack took place on the evening of October 30th, with the buck reportedly spearing the dog in the family’s yard.
The BC Conservation Services has since been informed as well animal control.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with wildlife, especially during rutting season when male deer, or bucks, become highly territorial and more prone to aggression.
The rutting season, which typically peaks between October and December, is when bucks are at their most protective and are known to exhibit unpredictable behaviour.
Authorities are reminding residents in urban areas with a high deer population to exercise caution, keep pets on a leash, and avoid any direct encounters with wildlife.
