PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – Are you looking to add a new furry friend to your family? The Arizona Humane Society is offering free adoptions for dogs 50 pounds and over from Jan. 12-14 to help create more kennel space as shelters battle overcapacity issues.

AHS says they saw more pets come into the shelter last year than they have in the past decade, which is fueled by a rise in animal cruelty cases, injured and abandoned strays, and housing and economic factors.

Most dogs available for adoption weigh over 50 pounds, and AHS hopes that this adoption special will be a time for the animals to find their fur-ever home. Bigger dogs make great pets for active families or anyone who enjoys hiking and outdoor activities.

For example, ‘Bunny’ is a 3-legged German shepherd was adopted on Saturday from AHS’ South Mountain Campus. On Dec. 26, the AHS Emergency Medical Technicians were called to a dog that was stuck in an irrigation drain near 35th Avenue and McDowell Road. AHS says Bunny was about 30 feet into the drain and couldn’t move.

After three hours, Bunny was finally freed. AHS says she was badly entangled in old ropes and collars and ended up hogtying herself to her back legs as she struggled to free herself from the drain.

Bunny was rushed to a hospital, where she was treated with fluids and antibiotics. However, veterinarians found her back leg was infected and needed to be amputated. With the help of AHS, Bunny got stronger, recovered, and was adopted into her new home as a happy and healthy pup.

The Arizona Humane Society helps over 22,000 sick and injured animals every year. They say that adopting animals not only saves their life but creates more space for sick, injured, and abused pets who need help.

From Friday, Jan. 12, to Sunday, Jan. 14, the Arizona Humane Society is waiving adoption fees for big dogs. Prospective pet owners can visit the South Mountain Campus and PetSmart near Miller and Camelback Roads between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. New owners will also receive a free pet exam and a bag of dog food for their new furry friend.
