MONTGOMERY, Ala.
(WTVA) - Alabama Governor Kay Ivey shared somber news on Friday, April 25, announcing the passing of her cherished canine companion, Missy Ivey, affectionately known as the state’s First Dog.
Missy, a blended collie mix believed to be around 10 years old, was adopted by Governor Ivey in January 2019 from the Montgomery Humane Shelter.
Since then, the two were virtually inseparable, with Missy often seen by the governor’s side — whether at the Governor’s Mansion, during official gatherings, or enjoying quiet moments on the lake.
“Missy was a great friend.
After the best days and the hardest ones, it was always so good to return to the Governor’s Mansion and be greeted by Missy.
She really made it feel like home, and I will miss her dearly,” Governor Ivey said in a heartfelt statement.
“Missy lived a great life.
There is nothing quite like the love from our pets.”
Governor Ivey also extended her gratitude to the team at Montgomery Veterinary Associates, who provided Missy with care and comfort in her final days.
She closed her message by encouraging Alabama families to hold their pets a little closer and cherish the unconditional love they bring into our lives.
