AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Amarillo animal officials are sharing tips to help pets that may experience anxiety during holidays like the Fourth of July.

Pets may experience anxiety during the Fourth of July due to fireworks being set off, creating unrecognizable noises throughout the weekend.

“Anxiety in dogs, a lot of times you will see restlessness. You’ll see them trying to hide in different places in your house, just moving around, panting really hard. Just visibly not comfortable with the scenario that they’re in,” said Cadillac Vet Clinic Technician Ashlyn Tompkins.

Some suggestions are to leave your pet indoors in an area where they are not a harm to themselves with music or a TV on, checking fences for any holes or loose boards, and having a microchip or collar on your pet with an I.D. tag in the event your pet does get loose.

“Those chips are so important because if your animal does get lost, we’re able to scan them. Animal management can scan them or a vet can scan them and that information is on the chip. We’re able to reunite you with your dog,” said Assistant Director of Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare Brandi Bullock.

If your pet does experience anxiety during events like the Fourth of July, you can speak with a vet about medication to help your pet through the holiday celebrations.
