According to the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore, January is Walk Your Pet Month.
“Time to take a walk, literally,” wrote the centre on its Facebook page. “January is the perfect time to get moving and shake off those holiday treats together.”
The centre offers tips for pet owners who struggle with leash training. These tips include:
- Beginning in a quiet area to minimize distractions.
- Bringing treats to encourage good leash behaviour.
- Practicing walks for five to 10 minutes to build confidence.
- If your pet pulls, stop walking until the leash is slack again.
“Grab the leash, lace up your shoes, and make walking a daily habit,” wrote the centre.
According to veterinarians, dogs should be walked for around one hour every day.
