SRINAGAR: In response to rising concerns stemming from a recent local social media podcast featuring Dr. S. Altaf Gilani, the Superintendent of the Central Veterinary Hospital, the Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) has issued a clarification aimed at dispelling misconceptions surrounding pet health and management in the Kashmir Valley.
The department said that the increasing trend of pet ownership in the region underscores the need for enhanced public awareness regarding responsible pet management. This includes a clear understanding of the responsibilities of pet ownership and a commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of animals.
In a statement released on Tuesday, AHD emphasized the critical importance of mandatory deworming and vaccination for pets. These preventative measures are essential not only for safeguarding animal health but also for preventing zoonotic diseases—those transmissible from animals to humans. “Maintaining pet hygiene through regular grooming, cleanliness, and veterinary check-ups is crucial for both animal and public health,” the department reiterated.
Dr. Anwar Hussain Nagoo, Media Liaison Officer, along with other officials from the Central Veterinary Hospital, stressed the significance of pet owners staying informed about best practices in pet care. This knowledge is vital for mitigating risks associated with zoonotic diseases and fostering a safe environment for both animals and the community.
The AHD underscored the “One Health” concept, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Responsible pet management and proper veterinary care contribute to a healthier community, the department noted. The One Health approach promotes collaboration across various sectors, including veterinary medicine, public health, and environmental science, to comprehensively address health challenges.
The department reassures the public that pets are safe to keep when adhering to the mandatory guidelines issued by the Animal Husbandry Department. Pet owners are encouraged to seek veterinary advice and ensure they comply with best practices to protect both their pets and the broader community.
