In the wake of the recent seizure of nearly 50 dogs from a Beekmantown-based animal rescue A Canine Gem on Ashley Road, the North Country community has united in an extraordinary display of support for the animals and the shelter.Elmore SPCA, an animal rescue shelter in Peru, has become the focal point of this support. Because of this, the nonprofit found itself overwhelmed with donations to such an extent that it was forced to close its doors to the public this week. The 49 dogs remain housed at the Clinton County Jail. In the meantime, Elmore SPCA is currently supplying food and essential supplies to ensure the well-being of these animals during this challenging time.Despite these efforts, the animal rescue center finds itself in need of further support, particularly to meet the escalating healthcare costs.Rebecca Moss-Patnode, Executive Director of Elmore SPCA, expressed, “There are rising healthcare costs that we are looking for assistance with.”In response, various pet-based organizations across Clinton County have mobilized to aid the cause. Champlain Valley Veterinary Services in Plattsburgh is spearheading a supply drive, welcoming donations of food, toys, and other necessities for the rescued dogs.Heather Parent, Hospital Manager at Champlain Valley Veterinary Services, explained their motivation, stating, “We've had experience before with this organization under investigation. We've seen pets come through. So we thought we'd help out Elmore by giving them whatever they need.”Meanwhile, A Plattsburgh pet supply store, Tales of the Adirondacks, has joined the effort by collecting donations and offering discounts to customers purchasing supplies for Elmore. Similarly, Duprey Feed and Supply in Chazy is organizing a raffle, where donors stand a chance to win a brand-new Adirondack table upon contributing to Elmore.Rene Duprey, office manager of Duprey Feed and Supply LLC, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “These animals are in such bad shape that they need such care that the vet bills I'm sure are astronomical.”The community's fervent dedication to assisting these animals in need stems from a shared sense of responsibility and compassion.Heather Parent of Champlain Valley Veterinary Services articulated this sentiment, saying, “We all care, We're the voice for these animals and they can't speak, and they can't ask themselves. So, we figured if we could help Elmore out, and any other place that may end up taking some of these pets we would be happy to do it.”Individuals looking to contribute can drop off items at Elmore SPCA's site located at 556 Telegraph Road.
