MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) – Animal Friends of North Central West Virginia held their 21st annual Dog Day at the Pool at Marilla Park in Sabraton on Sunday.

Dog owners brought their furry friends to the pool from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

It’s held at the end of the pool season before all the water is drained out to give the dogs a chance to swim.

Entry was by donation, and all the proceeds will go towards a new facility for the no-kill shelter.

Katie Short, the shelter coordinator, said they’re proposing a 6,700 square foot building with two stories to provide modern amenities for dogs, cats and other animals that are brought in.

“We’ve currently been in our facility now for about 25 years experiencing the normal wear and tear and just the daily beating that the animals provide to our facility, so we’re looking to build a new facility to be able to better house these guys and to also be able to acquire more from our local facilities so we can save more lives,” said Short.

The new facility will have more dog and cat rooms, a lobby at the entrance and will separate the dogs and cats by floor.

It will be in the same place as the current facility at 252 Brewer Rd in Morgantown.

Short says the dog splash is a good way for pet owners to spend time with their furry friends and get involved with the shelter.

“A lot of people aren’t able to volunteer or even provide a lot of donations, so this gives them a day to have fun with their animals and support the homeless animals in their community as well,” said Short. “It’s also a good day for friends to come together and hang out outside of work or outside of home, relax and just enjoy the day by the pool.”

If you want to support Animal Friends of North Central West Virginia but can’t volunteer or donate, visit their thrift shop in the Mountaineer Mall on Greenbag Road.
