Ark-Valley Humane Society (AVHS) is requesting emergency help from the community for dogs Neo and Honey. Both need critical medical care after arriving at the shelter in quick succession. AVHS estimates care costs to exceed $9,200.
“Any amount given towards our medical fund will make a big difference for Neo and Honey’s surgeries, current medical treatment, and follow-up care,” said AVHS. “We will not give up on Neo and Honey. Please consider donating to help us in this effort to provide necessary medical treatment to Neo and Honey and give them a chance at the life they deserve.”
According to AVHS, every animal that enters the shelter’s care is provided with the necessary medical treatment to become available for adoption. This includes exams, vaccines, medications, and spay or neuter surgeries. Some cases require more help, such as more extensive surgeries and procedures. Through AVHS’s in-house medical program, animals are provided this type of treatment.
“We treat special medical cases often, but we are currently facing extremely difficult circumstances in the critical cases of Neo and Honey,” states an AVHS message.

Honey came to AVHS after she jumped from a vehicle and broke her femur. She is having difficulty putting weight on her rear left leg. Honey received x-rays and medical evaluations from the AVHS veterinarian and a canine orthopedic specialist.
Due to the location of the break near her hip, Honey will need specialized surgery to repair the injury. The goal of the surgery is to allow Honey to walk normally again.
Neo arrived after he was hit by a car. The accident caused damage to his abdomen, a shattered femur, and a broken hip.
“After being brought to AVHS, we had to act quickly in order to give him a chance at surviving his critical injuries. As an initial step towards addressing Neo’s injuries, he was brought to a local veterinary clinic where he received an extensive three-hour surgery to begin repairs on his femur,” stated AVHS.
“Unfortunately, this is not the only medical treatment Neo will need to become stabilized. Neo currently requires intensive care as he cannot move about on his own. This care includes hand feeding, pottying assistance, daily blood work, continuous administration of IV fluids, and monitoring of his vitals,” continued AVHS.
This progress is aimed at stabilizing the dog; however he will require another surgery to attempt repairs to his broken hip.
“We hope that he can get to this next step in his treatment,” said AVHS. “Neo is currently in critical condition. We are doing all that we can to support him, but he remains critical. He is fighting and we will continue to fight with him.”

To help care for these and other animals at the shelter, AVHS has called on the community to help, saying that Neo and Honey’s surgeries are beyond the capabilities of the in-house medical program.
“We need your help to provide these extensive surgeries for Honey and Neo through our vet partners,” stated AVHS.
Beyond surgeries, care will include continuous vet check-ups, additional x-rays, ultrasounds, IV fluids, medications, and support from AVHS staff.
AVHS estimates the cost Honey and Neo’s surgeries and continued care will be at least $9,200, and is asking the community to donate to help support these costs.
“We are continually in awe of the tremendous support our community shows AVHS and the homeless animals we care for. We are asking for your help again as we need to move quickly to help Honey and to give Neo a fighting chance,” said AVHS.
Those interested in donating can drop off or mail contributions to 701 Gregg Drive, Buena Vista, CO 81211. Checks can be made out to Ark-Valley Humane Society.
AVHS says they will keep the public updated as much as possible on Neo and Honey’s conditions, but must also focus on the care of the other homeless animals at the shelter.
AVHS also provided other options for help if donations are not feasible.
Honey needs a foster home while she receives medical treatment and recovers from surgery. She will need to be fostered in a home without other animals to allow her to rest while she heals.
If Neo is stabilized, he will also benefit from a foster home to relieve the stress of the shelter environment.
AVHS is currently caring for 18 dogs, bringing the shelter near its maximum capacity. Those looking to adopt a new companion, can view the animals at Ark-Valley.org/Adopt.
Those interested in fostering can find more information on this Ark-Valley page.
Adults looking to volunteer can find information here.
AVHS will also accept donated items. Pet food, litter, and toys can be dropped off at the shelter or purchased online through Chewy or Amazon. AVHS provides its Amazon Wishlist here.
More details on donation options are available on the AVHS website.
AVHS shared a video about the two dogs on their Instagram and Facebook pages.
