WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) -With less than a week away from national pet wellness month, now is the perfect time to evaluate your pet’s health and ensure they have the best care possible.
While to some, pets are considered family, a recent study by “Synchrony” found that nearly half of all pet owners underestimate the well-being of their pets.
With the abundance of new products, services and treatments available, it’s important for pet parents to know which methods are effective for maintaining the health of their furry friend.
“The most important things are just to be very updated in our preventive medicines which includes vaccinations and the warnings, and a yearly appointment is recommended as well,” PETS Clinic veterinarian Araceli Barrio said.
While the timing for vaccinations and check-ups may vary depending on the pet, it’s generally recommended to schedule these appointments every six to twelve months.
Another key aspect of a pet’s wellness is physical activity.
For pet parent Jose Rivera, staying active can take many forms.
“Usually, I try my best to at least do 20 to 30 minutes of physical activity with her, just making sure we get some kind of get some physical activity every day like even just playing tug of war in the house or something like that,” Rivera said.
While maintaining a pet’s physical health is crucial, it’s equally important for pet owners to prioritize their own mental health.
Barrio emphasizes that when pet owners show signs of overall health, it has a positive impact on their pets.
“I think that if the owner is with a good health, mental and basic health, this is going to be as well for the dogs,” Barrio said.
She also said to look at a heartworm prevention option, which can protect your pet from heart disease.
Also, when purchasing pet food, balance the price with the nutrition, so neither your wallet nor your pet has to lose out.
