Betty Brinley's dog means everything to her.

Pippin is a black Shih Tzu. She keeps Brinley company at Trustwell Living Mansfield Place.

“I don't know what she'd do without that dog,” said Andi Sneeringer, Brinley's daughter.

Trustwell Living Mansfield Place is an assisted-living facility that cares for a higher acuity of elderly who need additional care but still like a home setting.

Pets are part of that.

The facility allows its residents to have pets. In honor of National Pet Day (April 11), Trustwell Living hosted a pet party, complete with costumes and accessories for the half-dozen or so dogs. The pooches also enjoyed treats.

National Pet Day dedicates the day to those pets who may not always get the companionship and attention pets deserve. While loving our pets is something we do every day, the observance encourages helping out orphaned pet companions. It will improve their health and enhance their opportunities for adoption.

Therapy dog visits with residents of assisted-living facility

Sneering brought her Labradoodle named Sophie for the occasion. She is a therapy dog who makes frequent trips to Trustwell Living.

“She gets free treats (from the residents),” Sneering said of her dog.

Brinley couldn't participate in the party because of a recent medical procedure, but Pippin made an appearance.

“She's got more silver than black,” said Amy Mullins, community relations director at Trustwell Living.

While Pippin was enjoying some extra company, Brinley recalled getting the 11-year-old as a puppy.

“We saw something in the paper,” she said. “My husband didn't even know I was getting her, but he was fine.”

And Pippin?

“She's a sweetheart,” Brinley said. “She has a wonderful disposition.”

Christine Spoonemore, an employee at Trustwell Living, brought Chance, a Shih Tzu-poodle-mix, to the party. The dog belongs to her roommate.

“He's pretty fancy,” Spoonemore said of Chance. “We actually make his food. He gets homemade meals because he won't eat dog food.”

She said Chance is a common visitor at the facility.

“They (residents) love him, and he loves attention,” Spoonemore said. “He especially loves the courtyard.”

Trustwell Living wanted to share photos of some of the animals at the Humane Society of Richland County for National Pet Day. Yvonne Smith, one of the humane society board members, brought Bianca, a beagle rescued from a puppy mill operation.

“I ended up taking her home. I couldn't help it,” Smith said.

Scott Smith shares a treat with "Maggie" on Thusday at Trustwell Living at Mansfield Place.

Basset hound was big hit at party

Bianca enjoyed playing with Maggie, another canine visitor. The Basset hound's ears extend 24 inches from side to side.

Maggie came with Michelle Thompson, a social worker with SouthernCare.

While many residents do not have pets, they remember days when they did.

“John (Domer) and I had a dog for umpteen years,” Norma Domer said of her late husband. “When the neighbors got ready to move, they said, ‘Would you take the dog?' There was no way we could say no.”

Marjorie Hood said one of the family's pets when she was growing up was so devoted to Hood's mother, the dog entered the church and lay at the casket during her funeral.

“I love dogs, I love cats,” Hood said. “Anything but a snake.”
