Pet-related injuries are on the rise in Australia, with the number of cases more than doubling over the past decade.

A new study from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) shows the number of showed injuries from common pets had increased from 18.9 crude rates per 10,000 people in 2012-2013 to 47.5 in 2021-2022.

The report, released on Wednesday, showed a 10 per cent increase in hospitalisations from 2019-20 to 2020-21, corresponding to Australia's first lockdowns, and children aged under 15 years made up just under 13 per cent of pet-related injuries.

The growing number of injuries have been linked to an increase in pet ownership during the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than two-thirds of Australian households now estimated to own a pet.

Here's is a breakdown of some of the notable findings in the study:

More likely to be bitten by a dog than a snake

The new data shows Australians are around 90 per cent more likely to be attacked by a dog than by a venomous snake or lizard.

Approximately 40 per cent of Australian households have a dog, equating to about 5.1 million dogs.

Over 2021–2022, Australians recorded 9,542 cases of attacks where they were bitten or struck by a dog.

For comparison, they only recorded 539 cases of injury from venomous snakes and lizards.

Of those children hospitalised aged 0–4, half had been bitten or struck by a dog.

The age group accounted for six per cent of hospitalisations due to dog attacks.

Head and neck injuries increasing across all age groups

Children under five years continue to be at higher risk of injuries to the head and neck than any other age group, the study showed.

However, head and neck injuries were increasing across all age groups.

In general, open wounds were the most frequent type of injury reported, at 57 per cent.

The rate of pet-related injuries increased over the past decade across all Australian regions.

Hospitalisations associated with all other types of animal attacks decreased or remained static during the decade.

The report found 85 per cent of all animal-related injuries admitted to hospital were classified as emergencies.

Wildlife-related injuries on the decrease

The report found wildlife-related injuries have been decreasing since 2012 across all demographics.

In cases where injury was noted, the home was the most frequently recorded place of injury.

Bee allergies, or contact with hornets, wasps or bees headed the list of venomous animal attacks.

Brown snakes also topped the charts for most likely type of snake bite hospitalisation.
