TOXIC HALLOWEEN

Halloween is just a few days away, but the candy and treats will probably be hanging around for at least a couple of weeks if you have a houseful of kids going trick-or-treating this Thursday.

With all the excitement surrounding the Holiday, I want to remind you that although it might be a great holiday for your kids, please don't forget about your pets; because it can be a very dangerous holiday for them.

TrustedHousesitters has given us a list of dangers for your pet that you may not even be thinking about. I'm hoping that this little reminder will save a lot of heartache ahead of the Halloween holiday.

RAW PUMPKIN

Although pumpkin is typically okay for dogs to eat, you need to know that is is hard for them to digest RAW pumpkin and know that it should be avoided for both cats and dogs.

CHOCOLATE

Cocoa contains a chemical called theobromine, which is toxic for cats and dogs in varying amounts. Chocolate is really bad for both cats and dogs. Even small amounts of dark chocolate could cause life-threatening consequences. Milk chocolates and white chocolate are also toxic but it might take larger amounts. The best rule of thumb, keep ALL chocolate away from your pets. Pick up those Halloween bags, bowls, and all candy in places where your pets cannot get into them. Keep an eye on your kids because they might just run up to their room and leave the candy in a bag on the floor. If the pets get into it, it could cause a lot of pain and heartache for everyone involved.

GLOW STICKS

Halloween accessories can also cause a lot of problems for our pets. Especially things like glowsticks. Glowsticks contain toxic chemicals that make the sticks glow. On top of that, animals can swallow pieces or entire sticks which can also lead to choking and other problems.

CANDY WITH XYLITOL

You might think that your dog doesn't have a taste for sweet foods or candy, but you would be wrong. While sugar isn't poisonous to dogs and cats, Sugar substitutes can be very dangerous. Xylitol can cause life-threatening changes in blood sugar and liver toxicity. Another good reason for parents to remember to monitor your child's candy bag, and make sure that it is up and off the floor and somewhere that pets cannot get into it.
