ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – An award-winning Haitian St. Louis restaurant owner is condemning comments recently made by former president Donald Trump.

In a recent presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump made false claims that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, are eating dogs and cats.

“If you come to any restaurant in Haiti or anywhere, you’re not going to see—like we have a cat, dog,” said Marie Louis-Jeune, owner of My Marie Restaurant in south St. Louis on Cherokee near Compton. “This is a shame for the president—who’s running for president of the United States and former president.”

Haiti native Louis-Jeune moved to Cape Girardeau in 2010 after the earthquake in her home country. She opened My Marie there in 2019. She then moved the restaurant to St. Louis in 2022.

U.S. Census data show Haitians make up less than a half percent of Missouri’s population.
