Orange County Animal Services says they are in dire need of people to adopt and foster animals. As of Friday, the shelter had more than 200 dogs and a lot of kittens and cats. They're running two promotions to help get more animals in their homes. One of the shelter dogs, Onnica, has an unfortunate flag on her kennel as she is the longest resident. In less than a week, she will have been here for three months. “She is one of our top favorites,” said Zach Downes, public information officer for Orange County Health Services. “She's so friendly, she's really well behaved, it's kind of heartbreaking that she hasn't been picked up yet because she is one of the ideal pets.”While most dogs may not have been there as long as Onnica, more keep arriving. It's why Orange County Animal Services said they are in dire need of people to adopt and foster. “Right now, we have about 219 dogs at last check, and our sweet spot is probably about 170 and lower,” Downes said. “Only because we feel that is the proper number where we can care for each number effectively.”So they're running promotions to help find dogs like Onnica a home, including their gold medal favorite promotion in honor of the Olympics. “That promotion applies to animals that have been in the shelter for four weeks or longer,” Downes said. “They earn a gold star on their kennel card, and it signifies that they are on a reduced adoption fee of $10.”And if you're a Florida teacher, you can show your school ID and get a pet for free. “For the entire month of August,” Downes said.Hopefully, the promotion will help Onnica find a place other than her kennel to call home. “She's the perfect family dog,” Downes said. “We just want to make sure that somebody has the time to take the patience with her and just hang out with her and give her a good home life.” You can find adoptable pets at the shelter here.
