Berks pet shop welcomes customers back months after fire, will hold cat adoption | Berks Regional News

EXETER TWP., Pa. – A pet store in Exeter Township is getting a fresh start.

Owners said it's been a long summer of repairs, but they are happy to open the doors for their customers and furry friends.

Perfect Match Pet Shop in Exeter Township looked different for co-owner Leann Morgan back in June.

Pet shop evacuated after fire in Exeter Twp.

“I think, around like 3 p.m., so we were all here, was myself, my mother, and my little brother, who's 11-years-old,” said Morgan.

When flames broke out, Morgan said her brother jumped into action.

“So, he got an award because he got all the cats out of the cafe and saved everybody in there,” said Morgan.

Morgan said some fish died due to a power outage for 24 hours.

Authorities said the fire started in the HVAC unit.

“And then that caused smoke to get pumped in through the vents. There were a few issues with it, so the fire just continued to burn and burned up the roof,” Morgan said.

It left the owners to pick up the pieces.

“Pretty much everything was smoke and water damage before, and we didn't want exposure to any of the chemicals to be a problem for anybody,” said Morgan.

August 30th marked a fresh start.

“We completely gutted everything and brought in all new product,” said Morgan.

Customers and furry friends made their way down the shop aisles.

“Losing all the product ended up being a blessing, because we were like, ‘oh, well, we don't really need this, because it didn't really sell before. And now let's try this,'” said Morgan.

After the fire, the shop worked with local shelters to care for the animals.

“The chinchilla, only one who came back for adoption, who hasn't been adopted out yet. We did have a couple ferrets. They were adopted out. The cats came back from the foster homes,” said Morgan.

To celebrate, the shop will hold a special cat adoption event on Saturday.

“It's good. It's good to be back,” said Morgan.

The cat adoption event will run from 11a.m. to 3p.m.

All are welcome.
