Best Friends Humane Society In Worth Co. dog leash ordinance & pets cold weather safety tips

SYLVESTER, Ga. – With the chance of snow on the horizon, now is the time to make sure all your animals are ready for the colder weather. That involves taking the necessary steps to ensure their safety and comfort during this time.

Also, Worth county has recently updated its ordinance, and there are several important changes that local residents should be aware of.

“So, it’s basically to, ultimately, get dogs off a chain. We’re going to a trolley system, to eliminate the chains, and then that also kind of defines what proper shelter is. So, doing something like a pop up kennel with a blanket over it is not adequate. You need, like, one of the eight igloo houses or one of the actual, like, plastic dog houses. It also talks about how far you can have a dog from your house so you can keep a better eye on it. And, then one of the biggest things is that all outside animals have to be spayed and neutered,” said Leah Orr, Shelter Director, Best Friends Humane Society in Worth Co.

In addition to the new ordinance, there are other steps you can take to keep your pets safe in the cold, and resources available if you need assistance.

“Especially with this upcoming week, you need to take more precautions. It’s not just going to be a regular cold night. So, if at all possible, bring them in at night. You can put them back out during the day. We have straw here. If you need some straw, we can help with some kennels. We have blankets and beds. So, just really make sure that they have something to stay warm,” said Orr.

So, make sure to take care of those furry friends during the winter time. And, if you want to donate to the Best Friends Humane Society of Worth County, you can call (229) 777-7774.
