Brave Dog Takes on 11 Coyotes to Protect His Sheep—And Wins

Dogs are known for their intelligence and protective instincts, but few demonstrate these qualities as bravely as a Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog. When a pack of 11 wild coyotes launched an attack on a farm in Decatur, Georgia, one fearless dog put everything on the line to protect his flock.

On the night of November 3, a group of coyotes attempted to invade the sheep pen on John Wierwille’s property. Though John initially scared them off, the predators returned under the cover of darkness, prepared to strike again. But this time, they met their match.

Casper, John’s 20-month-old Great Pyrenees, was not about to let his sheep fall victim to the attack. As the coyotes closed in, Casper charged into action, taking on the pack in a battle that lasted over 30 minutes. Against all odds, Casper killed 8 of the coyotes, forcing the others to retreat.

In the aftermath of the brutal fight, Casper had disappeared, and his owner feared the worst. When the loyal dog finally returned home, he was severely injured but still standing.

“He looked like death, I mean he looked terrible,” John recalled. “But he just kind of looked at me like, ‘Boss, stop worrying about how bad I look, just take care of me.’”

Casper had suffered deep wounds on his back and neck, and he had lost his tail. His condition was dire, and for a time, it was unclear if he would pull through. But thanks to dedicated veterinary care and overwhelming community support, Casper began his road to recovery.

Veterinarians at LifeLine Animal Project were amazed by his resilience. Dr. Susan Brosman described him as “lucky to be alive”, while clinic supervisor Maisie Hale couldn’t help but admire his spirit. “He looks great now, he’s in good spirits. I love him. He’s such a good boy.”

Casper’s medical bills ranged between $15,000 and $20,000, but thanks to online fundraising and kind-hearted donors, his treatments were fully covered. While he still has months of recovery ahead, Casper’s story has already left a lasting impact, proving that true loyalty and bravery know no limits.

“He’s a hero for sure,” Dr. Brosman said.

Casper’s courage and determination saved his flock from certain doom, and now, he’s getting the love and care he deserves.
