Brits Are Embracing Pet Parenthood with Financial Savvy and Emotional Readiness

According to a recent survey by Petplan, as pet ownership rises across the UK, Brits are not only embracing the joys of pet parenthood but also doing so with a mix of financial savvy and emotional preparedness.

The survey, which included over 2,000 UK pet owners, highlights the careful budgeting that many Brits undertake for their pets. On average, pet owners spend £69 monthly on their companions, though this figure varies depending on the type of pet and the region. For instance, rabbit owners tend to spend the most, averaging £82 each month, while dog owners follow closely behind at £76. Pet owners in Greater London outspend the rest of the country, with an average monthly expenditure of £90.89. Younger pet owners, particularly those from Gen Z, appear to allocate even more, with an average spend of £87 per month.

Beyond the financial aspects, the survey indicates that many pet owners are dedicating time and effort to understanding their pets’ needs. A significant 58% of respondents researched pet training before bringing their new friend home. While seasoned pet owners often rely on their experience, younger generations, especially Gen Z, show a keen interest in learning, with 76% delving into pet training resources.

Navigating pet parenthood involves more than just budgeting and training; it also requires understanding the lifestyle changes and emotional commitments that come with it. Many respondents reported discussing pet responsibilities with family members before making the decision to adopt. In fact, 60% said they had conversations with family or housemates about the responsibilities involved in caring for a pet.

The increase in pet ownership during the lockdowns has brought challenges as well. As life returns to normal, some, particularly those in Gen Z, have struggled to balance pet care with more mobile lifestyles. The survey found that 41% of Gen Z pet owners wished they had considered how to manage the costs and care of their pet while being away from home, compared to 29% across all age groups.

Despite these challenges, the survey paints a picture of a nation deeply in love with its pets, with 86% of respondents feeling well-prepared for pet ownership. Rabbit owners, in particular, stand out as the most prepared group, with 91% expressing confidence in their readiness. Cities like Glasgow and Plymouth also shine as pet-prepared hotspots, with 90% of respondents from these areas feeling confident in their preparedness.
