The Burlington County Animal Shelter is gearing up for its busiest time of the year with a special event this Sunday, June 23. The Burlington County Kitten and Pet Shower, held in partnership with the Friends of the Burlington County Animal Shelter volunteer group, aims to boost adoptions during kitten season.
From noon to 3:30 p.m., visitors can meet and interact with the shelter’s kittens, dogs, and cats at 35 Academy Drive in Westampton. The event will also feature games, giveaways, and opportunities to learn about pet adoptions, fostering, and volunteer opportunities. Adoption fees for adult animals will be waived for those who initiate the adoption process during the event.
Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson emphasized the importance of community support during this busy time. “There are plenty of adorable kittens looking for homes, plus lots of adult animals that would make great companions,” she said. “For those who don’t feel ready to adopt, we’d love to recruit more foster families to take in kittens and other pets temporarily.”
Visitors are encouraged to bring donations to support the shelter’s youngest animals, including formula, food, training pads, baby wipes, heating pads, playpens, and bottles. A complete list of requested items can be found on the shelter’s website and Facebook page.
Kitten season typically runs from mid-March through December, with unaltered female cats giving birth to litters of four to eight kittens on average. The shelter stresses the importance of spaying and neutering cats at a young age to prevent unwanted litters.
So far this year, the shelter has facilitated the adoption of more than 507 cats and 224 dogs, with an additional 114 cats and 43 dogs supported by rescue groups. All adopted animals are spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations.
For those unable to attend the event, the shelter is open for walk-in visits during specific hours throughout the week and by appointment on Wednesdays. Available pets can be viewed online at the shelter’s website.
“The Burlington County Animal Shelter is one of our most important County services,” said Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Dan O’Connell. “This weekend’s open house is an opportunity for our residents to show their support and hopefully find a new loving companion.”
