Butler dog owners warned of potential parvovirus spread at two parks

The City of Wanneroo is warning dog owners over a reported detection of a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus at two parks in Butler.

The city swiftly released a warning to the public of the potential risk after social media posts in community pages detailed positive parvovirus cases following visits to Kingsbridge Park and Pembury Park in Butler.

The highly contagious virus causes vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and dehydration in dogs and can be potentially fatal — with the city urging residents to ensure their dogs are vaccinated against the disease.

City of Wanneroo manager for community safety and emergency management Kirsten Thrush said dog owners needed to stay vigilant.

“The City’s Parks Maintenance team ensures all parks and open spaces, including our dog parks, are well maintained for the safety of all users,” she said.

“Unfortunately, due to the highly contagious nature of parvovirus, even when water bowls, play spaces and bins are cleaned regularly, there is still a risk to dogs, especially unvaccinated ones.

Dogs can pick up parvovirus from any open space, including footpaths, beaches and parks. The best thing any dog owner can do to protect their pet is to make sure they are vaccinated.

“I would urge all dog owners to consult their local vet and check if their dog is up to date with its parvovirus vaccinations.”

The city said puppies could receive a combined vaccine from their vet to protect them against parvovirus and other diseases, with boosters then recommended every two to four weeks until puppies reach 16 weeks of age followed by annual boosters.
