Diabetes happens when a cat doesn’t have enough insulin or doesn’t use it right.

Any cat, at any age, can get it, but some things can raise their chances, like their age, sex, and breed.

Sadly, there’s usually no cure, but there are treatments, and with good care, your cat can have a mostly normal life.

Signs of diabetes in cats

It can be hard to notice when your cat’s habits change, so regular checkups at the vet are crucial.

But if you’re worried about your cat’s health, keep an eye out for these signs:

  • Drinking a lot more than usual
  • Peeing more, especially outside the litter box
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Feeling weaker than usual

Diabetes in cats begins with more drinking and peeing.

Cats with diabetes might eat more because they’re not getting enough nutrients.

If not treated, diabetes can lead to dehydration, depression, loss of motor skills, coma, and death.

While it’s usually not curable, some cats can improve with lifestyle and diet changes.

They may go into remission, feeling better for months or years, but it’s about managing, not curing, the disease.
