Canada Post has suspended service to an entire street in View Royal after a mail carrier was attacked by off-leash dogs last week.

The organization says the delivery agent was attacked by two loose dogs on Prince Robert Drive on Sept. 28.

“This is a serious cause of concern for our employees and for our customers,” said Canada Post in a statement Thursday.

Because of the attack, Canada Post has suspended all delivery service to Prince Robert Drive until the Capital Regional District bylaw and animal care services can complete an investigation of the incident.

The CRD told CHEK News it’s “looking into it” and that no other details were available Thursday.

In the meantime, Canada Post says it’s letting affected residents know about where they can pick up their mail.

“We hope to resume delivery as soon as possible when it is safe to do so,” said Canada Post.

Canada Post is also asking residents to keep their animals secure while mail is delivered in their neighbourhoods and has released several tips on how to do so, which can be found below:

  • Be careful when you answer the door, so your dog does not slip out.
  • Keep your dog inside, in a fenced yard or tied up far from the front door or mailbox.
  • Keep front doors and fence gates closed.
  • Keep your dog away from the screen door, even if it is locked.

“At Canada Post, we are proud to deliver our customers’ packages and mail. That’s why we need to ensure our employees can do it safely,” said Canada Post. “This is our number one priority and responsibility as an employer to every employee.”

In 2019, a Canada Post delivery agent had to be taken to hospital after being seriously injured in a dog attack in Saanich.

“Our employees encounter dogs every day, and while they love them, we understand dogs can sometimes be protective of their homes and families,” said Canada Post.

The organization has launched a social media campaign to help raise awareness about pet safety and mail carriers.
