Keep Them Dry

“Always keep your pet’s fur dry, especially in areas like the paws and underbelly,” advises Dr. Priya Anand, a veterinarian in Chennai. “Use pet-safe dryers if needed, but ensure they are comfortable with it.”
Protect Their Paws
Rainwater often carries harmful chemicals, dirt, and germs. Wash your pet’s paws after every walk to avoid infections. Consider using pet-friendly paw balms to prevent dryness or cracks.
“Moisture can cause paw irritation, so cleaning and inspecting paws regularly is essential,” says pet care expert Ramesh Kumar.
Maintain a Hygienic Environment
Ensure your pet’s bedding is clean and dry. Moist bedding can harbor bacteria and fungi, leading to infections. Use waterproof mats and wash their bedding frequently.
“Pets need a warm, dry space to feel secure during rains. A damp environment can affect their health,” warns animal behaviorist Kavitha Mohan.
Nutrition and Hydration
A nutritious diet boosts immunity, which is crucial during the monsoon when pets are prone to illnesses. Provide clean drinking water and avoid letting them drink stagnant rainwater.
“A strong immune system is their best defense. Feed them high-protein meals with seasonal vegetables, if safe,” suggests Dr. Arun Balaji, a pet nutritionist.
Limit Outdoor Time
Avoid letting your pets roam outdoors during heavy rains. Use raincoats and leashes for dogs if walks are necessary. Cats should ideally be kept indoors to prevent exposure to infections.
“Raincoats for pets are not just stylish but functional. They keep your pets warm and dry,” says pet store owner Meera Venkat.
Watch for Health Issues
Monitor your pets for signs of illness, such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or skin rashes. Consult a veterinarian immediately if you notice anything unusual.
“Prevention is better than cure. Regular check-ups during the rainy season can help identify and address problems early,” advises Dr. Raghunath, a leading vet in Chennai.
Manage Anxiety
Many pets experience anxiety due to loud thunder and rain. Provide a cozy and quiet space for them. You can also use calming sprays or play soothing music.
“Be patient and comforting. Your calm presence can help ease their stress,” says animal trainer Anjali Shankar.
“Pets are part of our family, and their well-being during challenging weather reflects our love and responsibility,” concludes Dr. Priya Anand.
