Carm’s Doghouse providing a home for displaced pets in Baldwinsville fire

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. — A heroic pit bull named Rocco has inspired a wave of community support following a devastating fire at the New Legacy Apartments in Baldwinsville. Rocco's quick actions during the blaze allowed residents and their pets to escape safely.

In the aftermath, local business Carm's Dog House has stepped up to provide temporary homes for dogs displaced by the fire. Volunteer firefighter Miranda Shaffer, who also works at Carm's Dog House, played a pivotal role in coordinating the effort.

I care about the animals and I know the families were going to be displaced and I know they were going to need shelter,” Shaffer said. “My work and us can work together and give back when they need help.

Shaffer reached out to her boss, Carmen Cesta, the owner of Carm's Dog House, to arrange accommodations for the pets in need.

“I mean that's what we do in a time of crisis,” Cesta said. “We always like to help out dog owners and do anything we can and we help as much as we can.”

Cesta acknowledged that many temporary accommodations for displaced families, such as hotels or apartments, might not accept dogs. Carm's Dog House is providing a “home away from home” experience for the pets.

We are going to treat them like every other dog,” Cesta said. “They play in daycare, they get to play with other dogs all day, and they get a little vacation while their owners are trying to find a new place to stay.

Shaffer expressed her satisfaction in being able to combine her professional life with her passion for community service.

“It makes me feel good that they came here and their pet parents know that they are going to be safe and sound and well fed and watered,” Shaffer said. “They are able to play with other dogs and animals here, it makes me feel good.”

Cesta added that the dogs can stay at Carm's Dog House for as long as needed, whether it's a week, a month, or even six months, emphasizing the business's commitment to giving back to the community.
