Female dogs are more prone to breast cancer than male dogs.

An expert said that the reason why female dogs are diagnosed with breast cancer more is the presence of progesterone in a high amount.

While you may assume that cancer is a threat only to human life, it is not certainly the truth. According to research, dogs are also diagnosed with cancer which has become a concern for people across the globe. In comparison to last year, an increase of 33 per cent has been witnessed in the people who have attempted to search for signs of breast cancer on Google.

In such a situation, Dr Haravtar Singh, a veterinary doctor, said that female dogs are more prone to breast cancer in comparison to male dogs. Dr Haravtar is currently serving at Harry Pets Clinic and Surgery Center, located in Yamuna Vihar, Delhi.

Dr Haravtar shared that the reason why female dogs are diagnosed with breast cancer more is the presence of progesterone in a high amount. He added that female dogs, generally, take six to seven months to grow into adults. Since the progesterone hormone released by their body is not utilised properly, this may cause cancer.

Symptoms Of Breast Cancer In Dogs

A lump or swelling around the nipple in a female dog that gradually becomes hard. The growth in the lump is constant which further results in pain.

Discharge of milk from the mammary gland where there are lumps.

There will be bleeding or discharge from nipples accompanied by redness and pus. This happens after the cancer cells in the memory gland start infecting the skin and the body.

Trouble breathing and cough

Loss of appetite and weight loss could also be one of the signs.

Notably, most of the signs of breast cancer in dogs are connected with tumours themselves. The symptoms can be found in one of the eight to ten mammary glands present in most female canines.

Treatment Of Breast Cancer

Dr Haravatar Singh said that the high progesterone in the female canine results in more release of prolactin hormone which further results in the production of milk in the mammary gland. The milk, when not released, forms lumps that cause breast cancer. Since this is also a bacterial infection, it is advisable to get your dog sterilised before six months of age. This will reduce the risk of breast cancer in the female canine. In addition to that, do not take dogs to places where there is too much exposure to sunlight and chemicals. Keep getting their teeth, skin, etc. checked regularly and provide them proper diet.
