QUINCY, Fla. (WCTV) – As many Big Bend residents prepare for Tropical Storm Helene, Champs Chance in Quincy is reminding pet owners to prepare their pets.
Alicia Bopp, founder of Champs Chance, said having a plan that includes pets is really important, whether a resident is planning to evacuate or remain at home.
“You wouldn’t leave your child behind or leave their medicine, or their belongings behind that they might need if you plan on evacuating,” Bopp said. “To me, it’s kind of like the same as a family member or you know your child. Definitely make sure you’re prepared and have everything that they need.”
For those who may evacuate, Bopp encourages residents to think about what travel will look like for their pets and make sure all pets and crates are indoors ahead of the storm.
Additionally, Bopp advises pet owners to have several weeks’ worth of the medication their pets may need. It is also important to make sure there’s enough food and water to last several days, tags and IDs, and any comfort items such as beds and toys.
More pet prep tips include finding pet-friendly housing, ensuring pets that are indoors are unable to escape, and identifying local pet-friendly emergency shelters.
Champs Chance is an outdoor shelter and is in need of storm fosters. For those able to foster a dog for the duration of the storm, visit Champs Chance’s Facebook page or website.
