Chester Hill dog owner recalls moment pet puppy run over by car

A Sydney pet owner who watched in horror as his beloved puppy was run over by a car on Saturday night has pleaded with the driver involved to come forward.

Damon King was walking home from the shops just before 9.30pm on Saturday when he heard a car’s screeching brakes, before a dog began yelping in pain.

He quickly realised the injured animal was his own seven-month-old Jack Russell Terrier-cross, which had wandered into traffic on Miller Rd in Chester Hill.

Home security cameras captured the moment the dog went under the car, with King fearing “this might be the end” for his pet.

“(The driver) slammed on the brakes. I said ‘you need to get out of the car, you need to help me’,” King told 7NEWS.com.au.

A motorist driving behind the car involved tried to follow them as they drove off but lost contact, and in all the commotion no number plate details were taken down.

“It’s pretty unfair. If I hit a dog, I would have checked that it’s OK,” King said.

Thankfully, the puppy escaped without any major injuries and was spat out from under the car with only a cut on his leg.

She was checked over by a vet and is expected to make a full recovery.

“I’m amazed she didn’t die. I’m surprised it was just a gash and not a broken leg,” King said.

NSW Police will check over the CCTV, but said there is little they can do without a number plate.

King said he wants the driver to “come forward and be accountable”.

“I don’t want them to be charged or pay (the vet) bills, but I want them to apologise and own up to what they did,” he said.

King said he is now pressing his real estate agent to fix the front and back doors at his rental property, where he has lived for nine months.

He said the locks are unreliable and believes one of his four dogs was able to jimmy open a door, letting the Jack Russell out.
