Chilton County dog trainer charged in dog’s death

A Chilton County dog trainer is facing animal cruelty charges after a dog in his care died. It happened in Verbena last month. The trainer was arrested on Monday.Chloe was a 4-month-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. She died last month at Cupid’s Dog House training facility in Verbena. Chloe’s owner, Karen Black, said when the trainer called her on Oct. 19, she knew something was wrong.Black said, “He said that he had some bad news that Chloe had passed. And my daughter and my husband were right there. And the screams that came out of my daughter, I’ve never heard before in my life.” Black said she had her veterinarian perform a necropsy on Chloe, which she says revealed the pup lost a third of her body weight during the three weeks she was at Cupid’s Dog House for training. The trainer and owner of the facility, Cupid Seymour, said Chloe’s death was heartbreaking for him as well. He believes the young pup contracted an illness from another dog at the facility.Seymour said, “Our condolences go out to the family and all pet owners that are concerned. We can assure you that no dog while here is starved or deprived of food.” Seymour sent Black several videos of Chloe being trained. He said the videos showed the pup was healthy and happy.Seymour said, “The dog didn’t lose any weight while it was here. She was plump and healthy in all of the videos.”Black pressed charges. Seymour was arrested earlier this week and charged with animal cruelty.Black said, “I don’t want any other family to feel what our family has felt. I don’t want any other dog to feel what our dog felt. I can only imagine what my poor baby went through by losing 33% of her body weight in three weeks. It’s unimaginable.”
