Whether we call them fur babies, furry/feathered friends, or man's best friend, our pets mean a lot to us.

The numbers back that up.

Nearly 87 million families in the U.S. own a pet, or about 66% of households, according to the American Pet Products Association. And Americans spent $147 billion on pet expenses like food, medicine, vet care, grooming and more in 2023, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

Personal finance site WalletHub released a study ranking the most pet friendly cities in the country, and four Ohio cities made the list: Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus, and Toledo.

100 of the largest U.S. cities were evaluated based on pet budget, pet health and wellness, and outdoor pet friendliness. “The most pet-friendly cities aren’t just those where it’s cheapest to own an animal and take care of its health,” said WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe. “Many factors contribute to a good environment for pets, from the availability of vets and pet-friendly stores to the prevalence of parks and how walkable each city is.”

Here's how the Ohio cities ranked for most pet friendly cities in the U.S.

Cincinnati ranked in the top 10 most pet-friendly cities

The Queen City came in as the No. 8 most pet-friendly city and was No. 1 for veterinarians per capita, according to WalletHub.

Cincinnati ranked No. 15 for pet health and wellness, which included factors such as veterinarians, pet businesses, dog-friendly restaurants and pet meetup groups per capita. It also finished inside the top 40 in the rankings for outdoor pet friendliness (No. 33) and budget (No. 37).

Cleveland lands in the top 25 on the list of pet-friendly cities

Cleveland followed Cincinnati in the rankings, coming in at No. 22 for most pet friendly cities.

It ranked well for budget (No. 15) and pet health and wellness (No.36), which helped it rank well despite being one of the worst cities for dog parks per capita.

Columbus No. 1 on the list for veterinary costs, while Toledo ranks as one of the worst pet-friendly cities

Columbus took the No. 1 spot for lowest veterinary costs among cities in the study, which helped it make the list at No. 12 for pet budget rank and No. 36 in the overall rankings.

Toledo was No. 93 out of the 100 cities listed. It ranked No. 10 for pet budget rank but was No. 98 for pet health and wellness.
